Yellow Springs is a village in Greene County, Ohio. It was founded in 1825 by William Mills and approximately 100 other families. While their original plan was to have Yellow Springs emulate the utopian community of New Harmony, Indiana, plans fell apart after a series of internal conflicts put a halt the process. Antioch College was founded in 1852 with noted scholar and abolitionist Horace Mann as its first president. Thanks in large part to Mann’s reputation as an abolitionist; Yellow Springs was one of the final stops along the Underground Railroad. Yellow Springs is named after an iron ore-rich natural spring located in nearby Glen Helen Preserve, which leaves a yellowish-orange deposit that colors the rocks.
