Xenia is a city in Greene County, Ohio. Its name in Greek means “hospitality.” The city was originally founded in 1803 when the land was passed from Thomas and Elizabeth Richardson, to John Paul, who bought 2,000 acres. The name “Xenia” was chosen through a democratic voting system held during a town meeting. The name was proposed by the Reverend Robert Armstrong in reference to the hospitality which he experienced while in the town. The community’s heart and soul was its tavern which opened in 1804. The city was driven towards industrialization due to the Little Miami Railroad, which provided a means of transportation for goods. Xenia currently stands as the third largest city in Greene County, next to Fairborn and Beavercreek.
