Waynesville is a village in Wayne Township, Warren County, Ohio. It was founded by Samuel Heighway in 1797, purchasing the land from Judge John Cleves Simms. This area was part of the Northwest Territory until Ohio became a state in 1803. The name Waynesville comes from General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, the man responsible for engineering the Treaty of Greenville which opened up the land and made it available for settlement. It became a significant Quaker settlement during the early 1800s. Some of the original 200 year old buildings situated on Main Street still exist today.
