Germantown is a city located in Montgomery County, Ohio. It was permanently established in 1804 by German settlers from Berks County, Pennsylvania. Only one of the settlers, Philip Gunckel, was able to communicate in English. He was recognized as the founder of the community, platting the land which would eventually become the modern day city center. Some of the city’s original buildings, first built in the 18th and 19th centuries, still stand today, and are recognized in the National Register of Historic Places. Germantown was once a major producer of both cigars and alcohol, as there were many cigar warehouses and distilleries located there.
