Hamilton, Ohio is a city located in Butler County and the county seat. It’s considered a part of the Cincinnati metro area and is well known to area history buffs for the historic neighborhood of Lindenwald. Founded by settlers from Europe in 1791, Hamilton originally was known by the name Fort Hamilton, after Alexander Hamilton. It was originally a frontier set military fort, intended mainly to be used as a supply station for American troops in the area. Located along the Great Miami River, Fort Hamilton was abandoned by 1800 and the surrounding area had morphed into a predominantly agricultural community. The town of Hamilton was platted, named and government was established in 1803. Officially incorporated in 1810, it lost its status in 1815 after failing to hold elections. It was finally reincorporated in 1827, along with the community directly across the river, Rossville. Hamilton became a city in 1857. Abraham Lincoln famously arrived in Hamilton by way of the historic Hamilton Station and gave a speech in support of a fellow politician, William Dennison, who was running for Governor. In the middle of the 19th century, the city of Hamilton was known as a manufacturing city, producing machines and equipment used to process the area’s plentiful agricultural bounty—steam engines, hay cutters, reapers, threshers, etc. The area also produced machine tools, household hardware, paper, guns, whiskey, beer, woolen goods and more.
