Fairfield, Ohio is a city located in Butler and Hamilton counties near Cincinnati. The location of present day Fairfield was purchased in 1787 by Judge John Cleves Symmes, a Revolutionary War colonel and New Jersey Congressman. The entire plot—330,000 acres, located between the mouth and the source of the two Miami Rivers—was purchased for about 67 cents per acre and the land patent was signed by President George Washington in 1794 and referred to as the Symmes or Miami Purchase. The first settlers in the area were Revolutionary War veterans, many of whom were New Jersey natives. Local Native American tribes presented a real concern for the settlers, faced with the constant fear of violence which threatened their lives and the lives of their families on a daily basis. In addition to Native American violence, the pioneers were faced with hunger and exposure as well. Despite all of this, the frontier provided these new settlers with a beautiful backdrop, in fact the city of Fairfield was named because of the natural beauty of the surrounding fields.
The major roads in and out of the Fairfield area have always been US Route 127 and State Route 4—although, as expected these roads evolved considerably from the dirt bridle paths they started out as. Over the years, the area around Fairfield started to expand, thanks in part to the addition of area toll roads, the Miami and Erie Canal, the Cincinnati-Hamilton & Dayton Railroad as well as two electric interurban lines. In the late 19th century, streetcars began traveling the traction line in Fairfield, right along Pleasant Avenue. Originally part of Fairfield Township before it was finally incorporated in 1955, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce tried to convince residents that annexation was the best way to go however the people disagreed, believing that annexation would result in a loss of their industrial revenues, school system as well as the opportunity for self-government.
