Modern day Alexandria, Kentucky was first settled back in 1793 by Frank Spilman and his family. Having relocated from King George County, Virginia, the name Alexandria is thought to have come from Alexandria, Virginia. In about 1819, the Spilman family began selling plots of land in hopes that the settlement would grow and prosper. That same year, a post office was built in town. Alexandria was officially incorporated as a city in 1834.

Over the years, the city of Alexandria has experienced slower than normal population growth, due largely to its distance from the Ohio River. Other cities situated closer to the river typically see more in the way of a population increase. Despite the city’s proximity to the river, it is worth noting that Kentucky’s second oldest road passes right through Alexandria. Originally called Old State Road and stretching from Newport to Winchester, the road was first established back in 1836. Shortly thereafter, residents founded the Newport and Alexandria Turnpike Company to help improve the road and in 1856, the new and improved turnpike opened under the name Alexandria Pike. Financed exclusively by toll booths (two of which were located within the city) for years, the county government purchased the road in 1921 and made it part of US Route 27, giving farmers and other business owners a free road to the various county markets.
